‘For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter and then to the Twelve.’ (1 Corinthians 15:3-5)
Easter! What do we make of it? Is it really all chocolate eggs and bunnies? Or is there more to it than that?
Easter is the pinnacle of the Christian faith as it expresses what is at the very centre of the faith. Because at Easter, we reflect upon a God who reaches out to us in love. We reflect upon a God who is willing to bridge the gap that we might come to him. A God who is so willing to do so, that he sends his only son Jesus into the world to pay the ultimate price for us.
We also see a picture of ourselves. Because we recognise that none of us are perfect. That we all are sinners and we need to be saved from sin and its consequences.
On the cross, Jesus lays down his life for our sin – past, present and future – that we might know forgiveness and peace with God – a holy God. But, of course, that is not the end of the story. Because on the third day, Jesus rose from the dead having conquered death. The tomb was empty – and Jesus appeared to many witnesses and showed he was alive!
And because he lives – we too can know life! Eternal life! Life in all its fullness!
At this time of year, we see new life all around us. Flowers blooming, new lambs being born. This new life makes it an appropriate time of year to celebrate Easter – but of course the message of Easter isn’t just for a day or a week. It is for every day – and it is for everyone!
All you have to do is to believe and trust in Jesus – the Saviour that you need – and follow Him all the days of your life! And you too can know hope, joy, peace and the depth of God’s love for you!
